  2. LA Weekly's Ultimate L.A. Band!

    Tue, Oct 29, 2013 at 12:10 PM

    Who's the ultimate L.A. band?

It's not enough to have just lived here or become popular here. The group's music, personality and history must be intertwined with the city. Acts like The Doors, X, Van Halen, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers come to mind, but for us, it's simple.

In contemporary cultural terms, Jane's Addiction, who receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame tomorrow, most deserve the distinction.

The act was the biggest and best L.A. group to emerge from the early 1990s alternative scene and garner mainstream commercial success. And, it was in the midst of dealing with drug struggles -- which are both celebrated and lamented in their first hit, "Jane Says."

A typical story, right? Except that it doesn't have the usual ending. The group didn't burn out, and even with Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro high as kites, their music thrived and their bond survived. Bassist Eric Avery unfortunately didn't stay with them, but drummer Stephen Perkins -- whose brutal beats are essential to the band's sound -- stayed on.

(Los Angeles - October 24, 2013) - Legendary alternative rock pioneers Jane's Addiction will be inducted to the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Wednesday, October 30th by special guest speakers John Densmore of the iconic L.A. rock band The Doors and Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters. The band will unveil their star at 6436 Hollywood Blvd, next to the Playmates of Hollywood Store in the category of Recording. Jane's Addiction will celebrate the occasion with a live outdoor performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, located in the heart of Hollywood.

Jane's Addiction celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the release of their album Nothing's Shocking in 2013, and spent this summer sharing the stage with Alice In Chains on the Rockstar Uproar Festival. At the tour stop in George, WA at the Gorge Amphitheatre, GoPro created an unprecedented moment by capturing live footage from Jane's Addiction's performance entirely with GoPro cameras. The film making was done mainly by the band themselves, with cameras being attached to drummer Stephen Perkins kit and chest, on the neck of Dave Navarro's guitar, on Chris Chaney's bass, on Perry Farrell's monitors, and around the stage in places larger cameras could not have gone. Always innovators themselves, Jane's Addiction was able to capture new perspectives and angles rarely seen before.
