From the proofreader of LIGHT YEARS: "Over summer break from college in 1991, while back home in Minneapolis, the first Lollapalooza was on tour so my high school friends and I bought tickets and tripped out to Harriet Island in St. Paul to see headliners Jane's Addiction, and Nine Inch Nails, plus Living Colour, Fishbone, Siouxsie Sioux and Henry Rollins, etc. Rollins kicked off the show in a cock suit that he quickly plucked; who was next? I dunno; then Nine Inch Nails came onstage and since I had on a NIN shirt I pushed my way through the throng of 16000 alternative music lovers to join my first mosh pit bouncing round the first bunch of rows... Moshing was known only to thrash skaters and punks back then but everybody still stuck out a helping hand when anybody fell. Other bands played as my friends and I toured the tents or raved out or whatever. All at once the sunny August day seeped into night and a light rain was falling as Jane's Addiction took the stage with I think their cynical yet ironic Nothing's Shocking. Countercultural culture shock?! What a seminal event. Glad to have taken part. Now in middle age I'm wondering how I could've ever gotten along in this world without my cassettes and concert tickets; the insidiousness of indie or alternative or progressive rock curbed my appetite for the norm and helped create an appreciation for the arts, and particularly the avant-garde, later in life. Hence, my enthusiasm for the LIGHT YEARS anthology, and all it unlocks within the collective soul."
