Jane’s Addiction Walk of Fame Induction Speech
By Taylor Hawkins
I love this band. They know it. I’ve been stalking them for years. From their triumphant 8 night stand at the John Anson to the Birkenstock incident at the Palladium, the “Stop” video at Mt. Baldy, 2 nights at Irvine, the first Lollapalooza, etc. I was there.
Back in the late 80’s rock music, at least in my eyes, was getting shittier by the day. Then one day of a buddy of mine showed up to my house holding a magazine. He said, “You have to hear this band…Jane’s Addiction.” “What kind of name is that?” I said. Then he showed me the picture. Nobody in the late 80’s had green dreads and a ring in their nose.
Like any good juvenile delinquent, I stole 10 bucks from my mom’s purse, went to the record shop and bought the cassette of Nothing’s Shocking. We got back to the house, rolled a joint from weed stolen from one of our parents, put the tape in and proceeded to have our minds blown. The singer sounded like a child singing nursery rhymes on acid in hell. The band could hypnotize you into a dream state and then out of nowhere break your nose with a ferocious sonic sucker punch - one part brutal dirty garage band, one part majestic colorful master technicians.
These guys changed everything for me. They brought rock n’ roll back to life and unquestionably bridged the gap and made way for what was to become alternative rock. Whatever the hell that means.
Congrats on this well deserved honor and in Perry’s immortal words from way back then, “Thank you, boys.”
